Habitat: Marshes, floodplains (land between a winter dike and the bed of a ditch or river), marshy meadows, salt pans, estuaries and along the coast in winter.

Appearance: Common summer visitor in large parts of Europe. In Belgium and the Netherlands, it is a fairly numerous breeding bird, year-round resident, migrant in large numbers, and winter visitor in fairly small to fairly large numbers.

Breeding season: April to July, ground nest, usually completely hidden in a tuft of grass, rarely exposed, lined with plant material from the immediate vicinity, 4 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 24 – 27 cm, wingspan 47 – 53 cm, weight 100 – 130 grams, age 19 years.

Food: In summer insects, snails, worms. In winter mainly small crustaceans and snails.
