Habitat: Black alder, birch, various types of conifers and other seed-bearing trees. Much more common than the lesser redpoll in winter.

Appearance: Breeds in Norway, northern and central Sweden, Finland and northern Russia. Migrant and winter visitor in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Breeding season: April – August, nests in trees, 4 – 6 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 11.5 – 13 cm, wingspan 19 – 22 cm, weight 9 – 12 grams, age 9 years.

Food: Seeds.
