Habitat: The Red-legged Partridge inhabits hilly country: open areas with dry, bare ground; grassland; stony heathland and scrubland in southern Europe. The bird moves with surprising ease even across the roughest terrain.

Appearance:  Resident in southern Europe. As a result of reintroductions, a few also live in the wild in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Breeding season: Late April to mid-July. Only the female incubates the eggs in a scraped-out nest hollow. 8–13 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 34–38 cm, wingspan 47–50 cm, weight 500 g, lifespan 3–5 years.

Food: It feeds on seeds, leaves and small invertebrates. As long as fresh green food is available, the birds can manage without drinking water.
