Habitat: Warm, sunny open areas, fields and gardens.

Appearance: The species is widespread in Africa, southern Europe and large parts of Asia. It is a migratory butterfly from the south (southern Europe) that migrates north during warm summers. It is observed fairly rarely to sparsely in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Flying time: From April to November, several generations.

Characteristics: Wingspan 22 – 28 mm.

Life cycle: Host plants are Sorrel (Rumex), Common Knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare), etc. The female lays yellow eggs, often with striking red spots, on the underside of the leaves of the host plant. The caterpillar spins a silken cocoon to pupate, often attached to twigs or leaves. The moths are nocturnal and are attracted to light.
