Habitat: Marshes with trees, open water, breakwaters and piers, even in urban areas. Found in both fresh and salt water.

Appearance: Widespread and common coastal bird in the west and along lakes and rivers on the continent. In Belgium and the Netherlands, it is a fairly numerous breeding bird – year-round bird – partially migratory – passage migrant and winter visitor in fairly large numbers.

Breeding season: April – August, colonies in trees, 3 to 4 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 77 – 94 cm, wingspan 121 – 149 cm, weight 1700 – 2500 grams, age older than 27 years.

Food: Fish.
