Habitat: Meadow areas with many ditches and other water-rich areas, close to towns and villages, also in city parks. Also breeds in trees in old nests.

Appearance: African species introduced to Europe and now feral, more similar to a shelduck than a goose. Fairly numerous breeding bird in Belgium and the Netherlands – year-round resident – winter visitor in fairly large numbers.

Breeding season: March – September, nest near water on the ground or in hollows; 6 – 10 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 63 – 73 cm, wingspan 134 – 154 cm, weight 1500 – 2250 grams, age 25 years.

Food: Grasses, seeds, potatoes and also small animals.
