Habitat: Combination of reeds and swamp forest along large rivers and lowland moors, preferably in trees with long hanging branches, such as birch and willow.

Appearance: In Europe, a resident bird of riverbanks with a scattered distribution; eastern birds are summer visitors. In Belgium and the Netherlands, an extremely rare to very rare breeding bird – migratory – winter visitor in extremely small numbers.

Breeding season: April – July, pouch nest in trees, 6 – 8 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 10 – 11.5 cm, wingspan 16 – 18 cm, weight 8 – 11.5 grams, age: 6 years.

Food: Small insects and spiders, pollen, seeds, small buds and fruits.
