Habitat: Wide variety of marshes, wet meadows in temperate Europe to marshes and deltas in the sub-tundra zone.

Appearance: In Europe, a somewhat local summer visitor, numerous during the spring and autumn migration and increasing winter visitor. In Belgium and the Netherlands, an extremely rare breeding bird – year bird – migratory – passage migrant in fairly large numbers, winter visitor in very small to small numbers.

Breeding season: May – July, ground nest, 4 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 29 – 32 cm, wingspan 54 – 58 cm, weight 130 – 260 grams, age 13 years.

Food: Small animals.
