Habitat: All kinds of grassy places and marshy areas.

Appearance: Its distribution area extends across North-West Africa, Southern and Central Europe, to Central Asia (Altai). It is a migratory butterfly that is observed as a vagrant in Southern England, Denmark and Southern Scandinavia. A moth that is common in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Flying time: Mid-April to early November, sometimes in three generations.

Characteristics: Wingspan 36 – 44 mm.

Life cycle: Host plants are from the grass family (Poaceae), such as Cat grass (Dactylis glomerata) and Common Couch (Elymus repens). The species overwinters as a caterpillar and feeds mainly at night. The caterpillar pupates in a cocoon, often in the ground or under debris. The moths are attracted to light and grease.
