Habitat: Nests in treetops and on buildings. Forages in fields, meadows, wetlands and rubbish dumps.

Appearance: In Europe, a summer visitor arriving in March and departing at the end of August. Captive birds are resident. In Belgium and the Netherlands, it is a scarce breeding bird – year bird – partially migratory – passerine in small numbers – winter visitor in very small to small numbers.

Breeding season: March – August, nest on buildings and masts, 3 – 5 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 95 – 110 cm, wingspan 180 – 218 cm, weight 2600 – 4400 grams, age 39 years.

Food: Mice, insects, earthworms, sometimes amphibians.
