Habitat: Dry plains, stony and sandy terrain with low vegetation, and on mountain slopes.

Appearance: The only pipit species to breed in the Canary Islands and Madeira (endemic).

Breeding season: Between February/March and July. Nests on the ground, often in dry, stony terrain, usually laying 3 to 4 eggs, and the species is known for having two or more broods per year.

Characteristics: Length 15–18 cm, wingspan 24–26 cm, weight 16–19 grams, lifespan 2 years.

Food: Their diet consists of various small invertebrates (insects and larvae) which they find on the rocky ground or in the vegetation, supplemented with small seeds when these are readily available.
