Habitat: Consists mainly of grasslands and fallow fields.

Appearance: Found in Southern Europe and North Africa. Not found in Belgium, but only one sighting is known in the Netherlands.

Flying time: Active from March to July, depending on altitude and location, with a peak in sightings between April and June.

Characteristics: Wingspan 37-40 mm.

Life cycle: Host plant abroad is Arabian pea (Bituminaria bituminosa). The caterpillars feed specifically on the flowers of the host plant and often rest openly on the flower stems. The species overwinters as a pupa and emerges as an adult butterfly the following spring. The butterfly flies during the day in sunny weather and visits flowers such as Blueweed (Echium vulgare) and clovers (Trifolium). It often darts quickly from one flower to another. The butterfly is also active at night and is attracted to light.
