Habitat: Stagnant, often large areas of water, such as reed-lined lakes.

Appearance: Found only in southern Europe. First recorded in Spain in 1980 and in Portugal in 1991. Rare in Sicily and Sardinia. Common in tropical Africa and parts of Southwest Asia.

Flying season: April to October.

Characteristics: Length 51-67 mm, wingspan 72-86 mm

Life cycle: The larvae live underwater, often hidden on the bottom among aquatic plants. Depending on the temperature and food supply, the larval stage lasts one to two years, during which the larva moults several times.
