Habitat: Colonial breeder on outer walls. In the south also in uninhabited rocky gorges.

Appearance: Common summer visitor in Europe. The house martin hibernates in tropical Africa. Numerous breeding birds in Belgium and the Netherlands – large numbers migrate.

Breeding season: May to August. The nest is a round half-cup made of mud against exterior walls, but sometimes also against wood, with a narrow entrance. Man-made nests are popular because the scarcity of unpaved roads means they lack building material. 3 to 5 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 14 – 15 cm, wingspan 26 – 29 cm, weight 15 – 22 grams, age 14 years.

Food: Insects caught in flight; as these are absent in winter, all swallows are migratory birds.
