Habitat: Dunes, heathland, roadsides and railway embankments.

Appearance: Found throughout most of Europe, with the exception of the British Isles, the Arctic regions and most of the Alps. Its range extends to Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Common in Belgium and very common in the Netherlands.

Flying time: Late April to late September, in two or three generations.

Characteristics: Wingspan 17-24 mm.

Life cycle: Host plants Sheep’s sorrel (Rumex acetosella) and Common sorrel (Rumex acetosa), etc. The caterpillars pupate in the ground. The pupa overwinters. The moths fly low above the ground during the day in sunny weather. When the sun disappears, they immediately settle low in the vegetation with their wings spread and held slightly upwards.
