Habitat: Breeds in tall bushes and open wooded areas with dense shrubbery, locally also in medium-high vegetation, sometimes in gardens or groups of trees near buildings.

Appearance: Throughout the year from south-west to south-east Europe. Mainly a resident bird. Occasional visitor to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Breeding season: April to June. The nest consists of twigs, dry stems, grass and roots and is located in the bushes some distance above the ground. The 3 to 5 yellow-white eggs are heavily spotted with rust-brown.

Characteristics: Length 13-14 cm, wingspan 18-22 cm, weight 12-25 grams, age 8 years.

Food: During the breeding season, small Blackcaps eat insects, spiders, berries and other small fruits.
