Habitat: In orchards, copses, thickets, hedgerows, gardens, etc.

Appearance: Breeds on Madeira and the Canary Islands (not on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote).

Breeding season: March–July. Nests in shrubs or dense trees. 3–5 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 12–13 cm, wingspan 20–23 cm, weight 15–20 g, lifespan less than 8 years.

Food: They feed on various grass seeds, weed seeds and small buds. In addition to seeds, they also eat small insects, particularly during the breeding season to provide their young with sufficient protein. Their diet is supplemented with fruits, berries and nectar, depending on the season.
