Habitat: Wet grasslands and fields, marshes, high moors with wetlands, river estuaries, salt pans, lakes.

Appearance: Widespread, often common resident bird, summer visitor, migrant or winter visitor throughout Europe.

Breeding season: March – June, ground nest, 4 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 29 – 31 cm, wingspan 67 – 72 cm, weight 128 – 330 grams, age 25 years.

Food: Small ground animals.
