Habitat: Breeds mainly in extensive, old, quiet forests near marshes, pools, streams or rivers, preferably in hilly areas. Nest made of branches high in the treetops.

Appearance: Summer visitor to Europe, migrates to Africa in October. In Belgium and the Netherlands, a very small number pass through – winter visitor in very small numbers.

Breeding season: May – August, nests high in trees, 3 – 5 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 90 – 105 cm, wingspan 173 – 205 cm, weight 3000 grams, age 18 years.

Food: Water insects, fish, amphibians.
