Habitat: Wet grasslands, densely vegetated marshes and along the coast in winter.

Appearance: Common summer visitor in large parts of Northern and Eastern Europe. Winter visitor and migrant. In Belgium and the Netherlands, a fairly rare breeding bird – year bird – partially migratory – migrant and winter visitor in large numbers.

Breeding season: April to July, ground nest, 4 eggs.

Characteristics: Length 48 to 57 cm, wingspan 89 to 106 cm, weight 540 to 1360 grams, age 31 years.

Food: Small vertebrates and invertebrates.
