Habitat: Landscapes with forests, fields and scrubland. The flight of a Booted Eagle is somewhat undulating and reminiscent of that of harriers. When the air currents are favourable, it spends almost the entire day soaring high in the sky. In September or October, Booted Eagles leave their breeding grounds and migrate south to the savannahs of Africa. They return to their breeding grounds in April.
Appearance: Summer visitor in south-western and south-eastern Europe, occurring in Spain, Portugal, southern France and from Hungary to Greece, eastwards to Russia and Central Siberia. Winters in the savannahs of Africa and India.
Breeding season: May to July, nest lined with green leaves, built in trees or on rocks, 1 to 2 eggs.
Characteristics: Length 46-52 cm, wingspan 113-134 cm, weight 720-960 grams, age no information found
Food: Its powerful legs, with a large grip and strong claws, reveal that the Booted Eagle is a true eagle. It hunts partly on the ground and partly in the air for all kinds of prey, from lizards to rabbits and small songbirds the size of a quail. Its territory is quite large, so the bird is not easily spotted.
